BASIC OBJECTIVES

The function of the Athletic Trainer (AT) in the schools is to provide services regarding the prevention, emergency treatment, and rehabilitation of sport injuries to student-athletes,
and to provide paramedical lifesaving services--first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

 

JOB TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES
1.   Coordinates the school's sports medicine service for home and "away" athletic events.
2.   Serves as liaison among the athlete, his parents, the coach and the consulting physician in matters relative to the prevention, care and management of athletic injuries.
3.   Coordinates with team physicians and the district office for football game coverage and physical screening examination for all student-athletes.
4.   Coordinates with team physicians and area sports medicine clinics for evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation of injured athletes, and recertification of athletes for re-entry into practice and/or game participation.
5.   Maintains files and records on the medical history of student-athletes including daily injury records, daily treatment records, physician referral and release records.
6.   Plans and develops an athletic training facility to meet the needs of studentathletes.
7.   Maintains the budget, and purchase of supplies and equipment for the athletic training room.
8.   Coordinates with coaches and school administrators policies and procedures in the use of the training room for the prevention, care and management of injuries.

10. Supervises the athletic training room facility, athletic locker rooms and shower facilities to ensure the maintenance of good hygiene, sanitation and safety.
11. Supervises the student trainer staff and other voluntary services for sports medicine activities.
12. Advises and counsels the coaching staff and athletic administration concerning safety issues relative to athletic equipment and facilities.
13. Advises and counsels athletes and parents concerning emergency treatment of injuries, nutritional and other health needs.
14. Provides CPR and first aid instruction to the coaching staff and other teachers.
15. Advises student-athletes and coaches on planning and implementing pre-season and off-season conditioning programs.
16. Advises and supervises the selection, use and maintenance of protective equipment.
17. Monitors players for over-fatigue, excessive weight gains and/or losses, and supervises dietary supplement plans relevant to athletic participation.
18. Coordinates and implements inservice programs for coaches regarding the prevention and management of injuries.
19. Plans and organizes emergency procedures for injured athletes.
20. Plans and arranges with host schools emergency medical services for away games.
21. Ensures the availability and proper use of necessary emergency equipment.
22. Coordinates with administrators, athletic directors, coaches and consulting or team physicians the procedures for evaluating, referring and caring for injuries to athletes.
23. Makes provisions for the care and management of minor injuries and refers to physicians those injuries requiring additional medical services.
24. Serves as liaison between the physician, the injured athlete and his parents, and the coaching staff injury diagnosis, status and progress of the injured athlete.
25. Provides post-injury care and reconditioning programs prescribed by the consulting physician and organizes selected exercises and drills to maintain conditioning level of the injured athletic.
26. Informs coaches of the progress of injured athletes and the degree to which these athletes may participate in practice and/or game sessions.
27. Applies techniques and devices such as strapping, bandaging, braces, or special protective equipment designed to prevent or protect athletic injuries.
28. Assists in the development of special injury protection pads or devices needed to enable the injured athlete to participate without subjecting the athlete to further injury.
29. Coordinates and supervises a student athletic trainer program and curriculum.
30. Maintains the training room, including a proper inventory of needed supplies, so that all athletes from all sports at the school can be attended to.
31. Maintains National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) membership, the cost of which shall be borne by the Board.
32. Attends such workshops and conferences to obtain/maintain National Certification, any expenses incurred shall be borne by the Board.
33. Performs directly related work as required or as assigned.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is light work which requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. The worker is exposed to
heat, cold, noise and atmospheric conditions. The work is performed indoors and outdoors.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. Must be certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and maintain the association's standards.
2. Must be certified in First Aid and CPR.
3. Must be able to successfully communicate with students, parents, administrators and medical personnel
